Prairie Dawn

There is this little pink puppet on Sesame Street that Brent makes fun of everyday because "She doesn't have a nose!" and "She can't even reach her arms above her head!" and "She looks like a worm." Poor thing is just a little pink puppet! Brent's victim is named 'Prairie Dawn' pictured below and I think she is cute as a button:

As a matter of fact, she's Callie's favorite! We know this because she licks the tv screen when she sees her.
Here are some pictures of the runts from today.
Eating sunshine and doin' his weirdbeard thang!

Move your little belly and do the Groverelli!

Callie is walking! On Saturday, Brent and I were making her walk back and forth between us and in the middle of one pass, she kind of turned left and realized that she could walk anywhere she wanted to go. She's been walking fool ever since! We are so screwed! (Well, maybe just half screwed until Wyatt catches up.) She's really funny when she walks too. She holds both arms above her head and flails them around like a little orangutan. You know when she is getting ready to walk too because she throws those hands up a good 20 seconds before she takes a step. Wyatt looks at her in total amazement and he claps for her after she falls. It's precious.

There are a couple of really mundane things that happen in our house everyday that I never think to mention and don't want to forget about a couple years down the road because for me, it's the repetitive things that define the "feeling" for the way things work around here. The kids are still on bottles. (Yes, I know this is bad but they like their milk from bottles and juice from sippies.) Anyway, when they have their bottles but they aren't thirsty, they shake the hell out of those bottles and spew milk from floor to ceiling. We are constantly screaming at them, "NO MARACAS!", and they know what we mean.

Then, we have this Sesame Street DVD that is always playing on our tv mostly because 1.) I'm sick of Baby Einstein and 2.) it's an hour long so I don't have to keep restarting it. Well, there is this one part of the movie where Grover teaches everyone a dance called the Groverelli. ("Stand up! Stand up! Move around like jelly!") So, Brent and I are constantly singing and dancing this dumb jig while doing the dishes, in the shower, driving down the road... it doesn't even have to be playing. The best parts of the song are Grover's ad libs between the verses. Our favorite ad lib is when he says "You might want to bust out the maracas for this one!" It should be our theme song.

Not to mention those damn blinds! The kids hands seem to be magnetized towards the blinds. I tell those little runts exactly 431 times a day to quit tugging on the blinds. Frankly, I'm amazed by my own patience. We caved and pulled the blinds up on one window so they could bang on the glass and scare the dogs... It's almost like they are becoming window fixtures themselves!
Another thing that happens in our house everyday is the game of "Road Kill" that the kids play together. It's awesome because they will play this together for half an hour or more by themselves while we get a little break. They have this toy called the roundabout that has a chair that rotates around a fixed center. Anyway, one of them will push the chair around the circle and the other kid is roundabout road kill. The kid who is the road kill gets knocked over by the chair and then trampled on with every pass the chair comes around. The road kill never has time to escape because the pusher is usually pretty fast and the road kill actually LIKES being trampled on. It's hilarious and totally weird. This game used to always result in tears, but now it's just a half hour or more of ridiculous giggles and non-stop laughter for the both of them.

Two things... first, Monkey started clapping yesterday. I mean, he was probably supposed to be doing that months ago, but I'm very proud none-the-less. Wyatt is an over-analyzer, just like me. He puts way too much thought into everything which unfortunately just complicates the easiest of tasks. Either that, or the kid has no hand-eye coordination which is dampening my dreams of him winning the Heismann or whatever the big baseball and soccer awards are called. I'm hoping it's just the first reason... but if it's the second one, I'm responsible for that gene too.

Anyway, yesterday at breakfast, he stuck one hand firmly out in front of him like he was thinking about karate-chopping one of the cheerios on his tray. Then slowly brought his other hand to meet the hand that was frozen in front of him. When he realized he had actually clapped, the look on his face was so cute. He is seriously HIS biggest fan! After that, he clapped all day... always with one hand steady while he smacked the other one against it.

The second thing made me realize that the kids are picking up on words and stuff better than I thought. So, all the preschool-unfriendly language in the house needs to come to a screeching halt! Callie has been kind of cranky and clingy the last couple of days and she is constantly crawling on me, up me, and over me to get me to hold her where she can bury her face in my neck. Well, I was sitting on the floor yesterday when Callie came over to pull her self up on my shirt and she grabbed a huge and painful handful of... well... boob. Ahem. I grabbed her hand quickly and yelled at her (mostly for myself), "Ouch! Callie! That was my freaking boob!" No joke, the kid looked me square in the eye and said, "Boob."

Oops.

Here's a picture of her helping me with the laundry yesterday while Wyatt was taking a nap. She really did too! She pulled things out of the basket and handed them to me one by one and then she also helped me to push the laundry basket towards the laundry room. The crazy thing about it all was the she really did understand that she was helping me and she was trying to help me. She's going to make my heart explode one day because I have way too much love for that runt. Wyatt too. My cup runeth over and then some!

P.S. - What is up with American Idol this year? It's so boring!

Back off ladies, he's mine! (And such a gem!)

I got tagged along time ago and never took the time to answer it. So, here is my contribution and in an effort to involve Brent, his answers will be below in red...

Brent: (annoyed) "I have too many... what's the next question?"
Heather: Bacon, Egg and Cheese biscuits from McDonalds

Brent: (irritated) "How many questions are there?!?"
Heather: I would wipe out all aholes who are mean to animals

name the cartoon character you identify with the most.
Brent: "Goofy."
Me: "Why?"
Brent: "It didn't ask why!"
Heather: Angelica from Tiny Toons

Brent: The day the kids were born.
Me: "You would?"
Brent: "Wouldn't you?"
Me: "Nah... way too much pain."

Heather: Our backyard in Atlanta.

what is your one most important contribution to this world?
Brent: "Nothing."

Thai Green Curry Beef

I don't post recipes too often, but when I do... know that they are damn good. This is a thai dish that my aunt made for us this weekend. It was so good that I ate more even after I was full knowing it was going to give me that 'I ate too much 3 helpings ago' and 'I hope I don't sneeze because I might just explode' feeling.

Also, if you aren't an exotic and spicy food lover, then this recipe is not for you. My uncle broke out into a sweat because that's what he does when food is too hot and Brent hiccuped for at least an hour because... well... that's what he does when food is too hot. We had a rum baked pineapple with banana ice cream on top for dessert. If you are interested in that recipe, just let me know and I will forward it to you.

*Edited 10/3/08: I've tweeked this recipe after the 20 times or so that I've made it, and the new version is the one that's listed below. I've also tried this with sliced flank steak and it's also really good!

Thai Green Curry Chicken

2 cooked chicken breasts, cut into strips
1 onion, chopped
1-2 cups broccoli
1⁄2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. chopped garlic
2 tbsp. olive oil
2 tbsp. green curry paste
1 can coconut milk
1 tbsp. soy sauce
1/2 tbsp. fish sauce
1 tbsp. white sugar
jasmine or white rice

Heat oil in a wok or large skillet to medium-high heat. Add green curry paste and stir-fry for 3 minutes, until fragrant. Add chopped garlic and stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes being careful not to burn the garlic. Add coconut milk, soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, onions, broccoli and bring to a simmer, stirring frequently. Stir in cooked chicken and simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from heat, cover, and let stand for 3 minutes. Serve over cooked rice.

Fun Weekend!

Wow! What a full weekend! Yesterday we went to the Jacksonville Zoo. We didn't really know how the kids were going to do... we hoped that they were old enough to enjoy it and it turned out better than we had hoped.

The Jacksonville Zoo is incredible! It's right on the water too and the exhibits were really nice. I usually have a hard time going to zoos because I feel so horrible about the animals being caged up and stuff but this zoo wasn't too bad at all. The kids really enjoyed the aviaries where the birds can fly around and are really close to you. They were able to see a lot of ducks and birds. Callie saw the jaguar and yelled, "Kitty!" She was definitely right and we had to laugh! The kids enjoyed the giraffes the most. You can even feed them so we were able to get pretty close.

The best part of the day for them (and for us) was the carousel. They were so excited and so scared at the same time! They were squealing and bug-eyed and laughing and shaking. I can't wait to take them on another one!
We were there a good two hours before they started getting cranky so we kind of sprinted past the monkeys to get out of there before it hit the fan. It was a really fun afternoon. Afterwards, we went to visit my aunt and uncle and spent the night with them. My aunt stuffed us full and we drank and had a little too much fun so when 6:30 came around this morning, Brent and I both looked and felt like death. Then we had to load up in the car and come home so that we could make it back to our friends' house for a Daytona 500 party. We rallied and had a lot of fun there too! No one really watched the race at all... it was basically just an excuse to get together, drink some more, and let the kids play together. We had so much fun but I guarantee you that both of us are going to be asleep before 9:00 tonight!

He's a Keeper!

It's true. My Valentine's Day was really nice this year. Brent got me breakfast, cleaned the house, had a massuse come over for me while he took care of the kids, had flowers delivered, and served me dinner in bed from our favorite restaurant on the island! We had crab stuffed flounder and seafood paella and wine...etc. It was so insanely good! Anyway, now I'm back in reality land listening to the kids screaming while they fight their morning nap. Boo to the hiss!

Happy Valentine's Day!

So long ol' buddy!

Today we said goodbye to our trusty friend... The Ranger. It really was a huge piece of our relationship in the beginning. Brent had this spare old beater truck that we drove to the ends of the earth and back. Not only was it TEAL, but it also had this funky odor that we could only identify as sticky old coke mixed with wet dog and mold. If you were any kind of damp, you couldn't sit in it because it would stain your clothes brown! It stalled out all the time, had transmission problems, wouldn't go into fifth gear...

In hindsight, I can't believe that we were even willing to be seen in this crapper! We took it around to jewelry shops when we were looking for wedding rings and as soon as we would pull up, you knew that the people inside were like, "Oh hell no! I am not waiting on those people!" Sure enough too... they would hardly ever ask us if we needed help! Brent and I would die laughing everytime! Sooo good!!!! I'll miss the little guy. We will definately always have tiny little pieces of our hearts that are teal!

Here is a cute little video of Cal walking. She's getting pretty good at it. I'm totally embarrassed that I'm in my pjs and wearing one of Brent's huge tshirts, but whatever.

One Year Appointment

So much has happened this week and I've totally been procrastinating on actually writing a blog because I've been recooping from the birthday festivities. And that recooping involved 3 days of taking care of the kids all by myself while Brent was out of town. As you can imagine... the recooping process has been slow.

Momma needs a vacation.

I'm afraid I'm going to forget all the things that I've been making mental notes about this week. Wyatt is passing out kisses like a frog in heat, and by that, I mean, he has been slipping the tongue! He comes at you with his tongue poking all the way out and wriggling it around like he is trying to seduce you! I get so torn too because it's painful to want to turn away a monkey kiss, but at the same time, I want to be like "EWW! What a little freakazoid!" I try to offer him my cheek to kiss instead, but the little turd inevitably finds my lips with his sloppy little tongue like a blind person trying to read brail on my face with his mouth. It's totally cute and totally sick at the same time.

So, like I said, Brent has been out of town for the last couple of days and that just leaves me a hot mess on the floor waiving my white flag. Well, when daddy walked in the door this morning, Cal decided that was reason enough to celebrate by busting out her 2nd and 3rd set of steps. Daddy. Not momma and not momma's tireless solo-weekend of peekaboo and crawling around playing chase efforts. Nope. Just Daddy. I was so happy for Cal and Brent and happy that I was there to see it, but I wallowed in a little bit of self-pity on that one. Woe is me... I know. At least I got her first steps and hopefully, she is saving up her first, "I love you." for me. (Hey, it's my blog... I can dream if I want to!)

Monkey finally started getting his groove on. It's kind of a bouncing thang... a make the girls swoon kind of a thang. He said "bye bye" this morning too! That was a relief seeing as how I was starting to picture him in his highschool graduation gown chanting "Momma. Momma. Momma." Callie said "Hi Kitty!" this weekend which was special for me because that was my first sentence too! (If you can even call that a sentence.) Also, I guess she is over "leedle" and "loddy" because she is now calling everything "duddy". What a cute little weird beard.

We went to the doctor on Tuesday for our one year appointment and both kids were the exact same height! Here are their stats:

Caroline
Weight - 22 lbs. 4 oz. (70%)
Height - 29.5 inch. (60%)
Head - 46 cm (75%)

Wyatt
Weight - 19 lbs. 9 oz. (10%)
Height - 29.5 inch. (40%)
Head - 46 cm (25%)

Just incase you are wondering, the percentile charts differ between boys and girls. That's how they can be the same for height and head circumference, but be in totally different percentiles. I've been very slack on taking pictures this week too, so instead, I'll post a few more that Allison took. Love!

My Squirts.

Allison Richardson Photography - Click Here to visit her site.

I can't speak any more highly of her and the pictures do seem to speak for themselves. She is amazingly talented and was able to capture my kids like I "see" them everyday. I can't thank her enough for these pictures that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

January 31st

So much has gone on the last couple of days so I have a lot of catching up to do! Their birthday was just really special for me and Brent and we were so happy that we had a "family" day to enjoy celebrating it. Brent went out in the morning and turned their carseats around! I know that sounds so minimal, but we have been looking forward to just that part of it since the day they were born! Wyatt just kept happily screaming as he finally realized that rides in the car involve much more than just staring at the back of the seat!

Then, we took them to Cracker Barrel to have breakfast with Bink and Britt. They got to try eggs and a wedge of orange (two foods they had to be 1 to eat), both of which they loved! Then, we went to Sam's to get stuff for their party and for Super Bowl. The kids took a nap, opened some presents, and got to play with Ellie and Noah who came down from Virginia with their mom for their birthday! It was such a fun day!
